AI in Healthcare: Hype vs. Reality

The latest AI & Tech for Good session, hosted by the Liverpool Chamber at the Old Hall, brought together a dynamic group to explore the intersection of technology and wellbeing. The event, a collaboration between KinShip, GoodShip*, and Generative Minds, went beyond the hype to offer a practical and honest look at how AI is already changing the healthcare landscape.

AI in Healthcare: Hype vs. Reality

The discussion was particularly insightful, thanks to contributions from two expert panellists. Jo Parkington, co-founder of EricaAi, shared her journey of using technology to support expectant mothers. Drawing on her 30 years of midwifery experience, she illustrated how her team evolved from traditional telehealth to using AI to provide critical support. The story of EricaAi is a powerful example of how innovation, guided by genuine human need, can deliver tangible benefits.

In contrast, Dr. Sam Whelan, a medical leader studying AI in healthcare at Harvard, offered a more critical perspective. He challenged the idea that the healthcare system is ready for widespread AI adoption, suggesting that current frameworks could actually hinder its full utility in general practice. However, he also acknowledged AI's potential as a tool for better understanding and treating patients, painting a more nuanced picture of its role as an enabler rather than a replacement.

The Big Questions: Law, Ethics, and Trust

One of the most compelling parts of the session was the frank discussion about the legal and ethical complexities of AI in medicine. A key question raised was: where would litigation land in the event of an advanced diagnosis from an AI system? This query highlighted the critical need for a robust legal framework to keep pace with technological advancements.

Another major theme was the importance of data protection, governance, and quality control. With the rise of AI-powered health apps and devices, ensuring the accuracy and security of sensitive patient data is paramount. The consensus was clear: purpose matters, and technology must be guided by ethical principles and aligned with real human needs.

Moving Forward: Collaboration and Optimism

Ultimately, the session instilled a sense of practical optimism. While acknowledging the very real risks and challenges such as safeguarding and legal liability, the panellists and attendees celebrated the immense potential for AI and tech to drive positive change. The key takeaway was that everyone has a role to play in building trust and ensuring accountability. Collaboration across professions and diverse groups is key to harnessing this technology for the greater good.
