Five Days That Changed What Students Believe Is Possible

From AI beginners to confident creators: how the AI Activator is preparing the next generation for an AI-enabled future.

Five Days That Changed What Students Believe Is Possible

Two Cohorts. Three Weeks. A New Model for the Future of Work.

What can happen when talented students are given access to emerging technology, real business challenges and the confidence to believe they can create meaningful solutions?

Over the past three weeks, we've seen the answer twice.

The latest GoodShip* AI Activator Demo Day marked the conclusion of our second Liverpool John Moores University cohort in just three weeks, providing powerful evidence that when people are given the right support, tools and opportunities, they can achieve extraordinary things in a remarkably short period of time.

The AI Activator was created to help students develop the skills, confidence and mindset needed to thrive in an AI-enabled world. What we've witnessed over the last three weeks suggests we're only scratching the surface of what's possible.

Building Momentum

The first AI Activator cohort of 2026 brought together an incredible group of students from Liverpool John Moores University's School of Psychology.

Many arrived with little or no experience of using AI tools. Within a single week, they were applying AI to research, project planning, idea development and problem solving while working on live challenges for Liverpool Women's Hospital Charity and Laurel's Woods.

They didn't simply learn about AI.

They built practical tools and solutions designed to support outreach, engagement and impact long after the programme had ended.

The quality of the work, the creativity on display and the confidence students developed in such a short period challenged many assumptions about how quickly people can adapt to emerging technologies.

Just days later, a second cohort began.

This time, students from a range of disciplines worked with live briefs from ARK Immersive, EdenFiftyOne® and Sensified Spaces®.

Once again, the results were remarkable.

Over five days, students progressed from AI beginners to building strategies, developing prototypes and creating practical solutions before presenting their work to an audience of more than 40 guests at Barclays Eagle Labs Liverpool.

Across both cohorts, the pattern was clear.

When people are given access to emerging technology, meaningful challenges and the confidence to experiment, they can achieve far more, and far faster, than traditional approaches often allow.

More Than Learning AI

The AI Activator was never designed to be a course about technology.

It was designed to help people develop confidence, curiosity and capability.

Throughout the programme, students explored how AI could be used to solve real-world challenges using tools including Google Gemini, Google Workspace, Canva, Granola and Lovable.

They developed research approaches, strategic recommendations, delivery plans, content ideas, prototypes and practical solutions for partner organisations.

Many participants had never used these platforms before arriving on day one.

Five days later, they were presenting ideas and products to business leaders, employers and industry professionals.

For some, the experience fundamentally changed their perception of what they were capable of achieving.

Proof of Impact

The most valuable outcome of the AI Activator programme wasn't the prototypes, presentations or strategies created during the week.

It was the transformation in how students saw themselves and their future opportunities.

Across both cohorts, students arrived with varying levels of experience and confidence around artificial intelligence. Many had never used the tools before. Some were unsure whether they had the skills or expertise to contribute meaningfully to a live business challenge.

By the end of the programme, they were presenting solutions to business leaders, developing working prototypes and confidently discussing how AI could be applied to solve real-world problems.

That shift matters.

Confidence is often the missing ingredient in employability. Technical skills can be taught, but belief in your own ability to learn, adapt and create value is what enables people to recognise and seize opportunities when they arise.

Business with Media Communications student Al-Reem Majead Mohamed Ahmed described how the programme boosted her confidence in working with AI and technology and helped her feel better prepared for an AI-driven future.

Other students reflected on the speed of progress they achieved during the programme.

As postgraduate student Ibrahim Haroun noted, the level of work produced would traditionally take months to deliver within a professional environment.

"We did it in five days."

That observation was echoed by multiple participants who recognised that AI, when combined with human creativity and collaboration, can dramatically accelerate problem solving and innovation.

Creating Opportunities Through Social Mobility

The AI Activator also highlights an important opportunity for social mobility.

Access to emerging technologies is not always evenly distributed. The people who will benefit most from the future of work are not necessarily those with the greatest technical knowledge today, but those who are given the opportunity to develop confidence, curiosity and practical experience using the tools that are reshaping industries.

By removing barriers to access and providing hands-on experience with real organisations, the programme creates opportunities for students to build skills, networks and professional confidence regardless of their starting point.

For many participants, this was the first time they had worked directly with businesses on live challenges, presented to senior professionals or developed solutions using cutting-edge AI platforms.

Those experiences help bridge the gap between education and employment.

They help students build evidence of capability.

They help employers discover talent that might otherwise go unnoticed.

And they help individuals see possibilities that may previously have felt out of reach.

The Human Impact

While the final presentations were impressive, some of the most meaningful feedback came from conversations throughout the week.

Students spoke about feeling inspired, encouraged and empowered to think differently about their futures.

Guests at Demo Day noticed it too.

Business leader Catherine Kanji reflected on the confidence that had been built throughout the programme, observing that leadership is ultimately about helping others see further than they thought possible.

She described how students shared the impact that encouragement, belief and support had on their confidence and aspirations.

Her reflection captured something central to the AI Activator experience:

"We rise because others lifted the horizon for us."

That is exactly what programmes like this are designed to do.

Not simply teach skills, but help people recognise the value they bring and the potential they possess.

Creating Value for Organisations

The impact extended beyond the students themselves.

Organisations including Liverpool Women's Hospital Charity, Laurel's Woods, ARK Immersive, EdenFiftyOne® and Sensified Spaces® gained fresh perspectives, innovative ideas and practical solutions developed by teams approaching challenges with creativity, curiosity and enthusiasm.

Faye Boswell, Founder of Sensified Spaces®, described the experience as "incredible" and praised the confidence and growth demonstrated by the students throughout the week.

The programme creates meaningful connections between education, industry and community organisations, helping students understand how their skills create tangible value while enabling organisations to explore new possibilities through AI.

Looking Ahead

The success of two cohorts in three weeks demonstrates that this is more than a one-off programme.

It is a repeatable model for developing confidence, employability, entrepreneurial thinking and future-ready skills at scale.

Students leave with new skills, stronger networks, greater confidence and a clearer understanding of the role they can play in an AI-enabled world.

Some will take those skills into employment. Others will apply them within existing organisations. And some will use them to create entirely new products, services and ventures of their own.

Throughout the programme, students are encouraged not just to solve problems, but to identify opportunities. To think creatively. To test ideas quickly. To build, iterate and learn. These are the same behaviours that drive innovation and entrepreneurship.

In a world where AI is lowering barriers to creation and accelerating the journey from idea to execution, entrepreneurial thinking is becoming an essential skill, regardless of career path.

That is why the AI Activator is not simply a technology programme.

It is an employability programme, a confidence-building programme and a social mobility programme.

It is also a platform for innovation and entrepreneurship, helping people develop the mindset and capability to create opportunities for themselves and others.

As we look ahead, we're exploring how the AI Activator can grow beyond Liverpool, working with education providers, employers and social mobility partners to create opportunities for more people to develop the skills, confidence and entrepreneurial mindset needed to thrive in an AI-enabled future.

Because the future belongs to people who can spot opportunities, adapt quickly and turn ideas into action.

The AI Activator is helping the next generation do exactly that.
