AI in Creativity: Shortcut, Boost, or Both?

AI acts as a double-edged sword in creativity, offering both a shortcut by automating the production of formats and variations, and a powerful boost by amplifying human creative strategy, speeding up ideation, and enabling personalization at scale.

AI in Creativity: Shortcut, Boost, or Both?

Is Artificial Intelligence a shortcut that does the thinking for us, or a powerful boost that makes creativity stronger? The honest answer is: it’s both, and how we use it changes everything.

The Shortcut: Efficiency and Access

At one end, AI is an undeniable shortcut by replacing repetitive design and production tasks.

Need to generate 30 social media formats from a single hero image? Or test dozens of headline variations for a new campaign? AI can crank out these outputs fast, freeing up your team’s valuable time and dramatically reducing the 'grunt' work. This is especially powerful for small teams or organisations with limited budgets, making professional-looking outputs accessible to far more people.

The Boost: Amplification and Scale

At the other end, AI acts as a serious boost, amplifying creative thinking and allowing for unprecedented speed.

It enables rapid iteration, surfaces surprising combinations, and helps teams prototype ideas they might never have had time to try. Senior marketers and designers can use AI to explore subtle tonal shifts, test multiple concepts in minutes, and personalise campaigns at scale. In this mode, the human strategist is still steering strategy and quality, using the tool to extend their reach. The best outcomes always happen when a human sets the brief and applies the final judgment.

The Tensions We Need to Address

As the technology matures, we must address the trade-offs. AI can encourage surface-level sameness if everyone starts from the same generic prompts, and it risks obscuring essential craft if we stop learning the fundamentals. We also face crucial ethical questions around attribution, bias, and creative ownership that demand open discussion. The necessary skillset is shifting from pure production to critical editing, idea curation, and prompt fluency.
